When I first saw the Amiga 1000 in Silica Shop in 1985, I knew where my future lay: I was convinced that this machine was going to revolutionise the way animation was done. I guess I'm not that clever though - I thought we'd be using computers to produce 2D stuff!
My job as Tech Support Manager for Scala in the UK led me into a number of years working as a consultant to broadcast TV companies in the use of computer graphics for television.
I got my first work in 3D through my friend Alan Marques at The Magic Camera Company, doing the title sequence for ITV's show Scavengers in the early nineties.
Soon afterwards, I went to work for Andy Bishop at Premier Vision, who were then the UK distributor for LightWave. I was only supposed to be there for a few days to help them out with a commercial, but ended up staying about three years! In that time, we built a team that grew to over 30 that, having been bought out by AMG, became amgFX.
While at Premier/AMG, I did a number of side projects for Magic Cameras, including the Bond film GoldenEye and Wind In The Willows. In 1996, I teamed up with Alan at Magic again and spent the best part of two years working on Lost In Space.
In 1998 I moved to the US. Over the next few years I worked at DreamWorks (Invasion America) and at Foundation Imaging (Roughnecks, Star Trek: Voyager) and freelanced in between.
In 2000, I formed Exile Films as a production company for BloodQuest, an animated film based on the Games Workshop Warhammer 40,000 universe. The less-than-stellar performance of the Final Fantasy film dealt us a body blow, and the events of September 11, 2001 were the straw that broke the camel's back - Hollywood wasn't looking for "dark" and we never regained the impetus that had initially looked so promising.
An illness took me out of the picture for a couple of years but in January 2004, I renewed my partnership with Andy Bishop and we formed a new division of his existing company, Darkside Animation, in London's West End. Since then, I've been shuttling between London and LA on a regular basis.
More recently, I've been working with Radical 3D in Venice (California!). I went there to work on expanding their render farm, but got roped into doing shots on their show Battle 360. I'm not the world's greatest animator, but I was actually quite pleased with how things came out, so I'll see about getting the okay to post some examples here...
Aside from LightWave, I'm into all kinds of things, but especially Shooting, Scalextric, and the aforementioned Warhammer 40K.
Last, but not least, life has changed quite significantly since a little person arrived in my life...
